The cartridges have a chip installed on them that makes the cartridges without needing to reset the chip after refilling. For the cartridges to work you need to have a working set of chips from a set of Epson's cartridges. They don't need to be brand new just still read by the printer. Tee Epson chip mounts under the chip on the cartridge. You do this once and that is it.
